Tender words from broken places

As I lay in the dark,

When sleep evades me,

I ponder the meaning of life.

You leave as you entered

Alone, with nothing.

By now, we all know

That material things do not matter.

Yet, if you have touched another’s life,

Shone a light when they could not see,

Loved wholly,

Inspired,

Cared,

Made an impact…no matter how briefly

Then that is a life well lived.

There is no greater investment

Than in another person.

To shape the course of someone else’s life

Is, perhaps, all the universe ever asks of us.

And maybe the stars that shine the brightest

Are the souls most remembered and revered

For the light they cast on another’s journey.
